Floating Number
The guestroom signage at “Rak Suisan” divides its 18 buildings into four larger blocks, each named after one of the four seasons: spring, summer, autumn, and winter.
For the many international guests who come from different linguistic and cultural backgrounds, the signage draws on kasane-no-irome, the traditional Japanese practice of layering colors to evoke the seasons. Through subtle variations and combinations of seasonal hues, the signs allow guests to appreciate the beauty of Japanese color while gently recognizing their location within the property.
The design seeks to create a contemporary form of Japanese visual communication—one that evokes the traditional Japanese sensibility of kachōfūgetsu, the appreciation of the beauty of nature through flowers, birds, wind, and the moon.
