This signage design was developed in conjunction with the relocation of the Nakano City Office to its new government building.
Beyond providing clear and functional information, the design seeks to reflect the diversity and adaptability that characterize the city of Nakano.
Known for its diverse cultures and subcultures, as well as the natural interaction of people across generations, Nakano has a flexible and open character that embraces and accommodates the new while allowing different identities to coexist.
Drawing on this distinctive character, the design combines contemporary typography, a minimal composition, and motifs such as speech bubbles and softly rounded frames to symbolize communication in both physical and digital realms.
Particular attention was given to creating a sense of quiet dialogue between users, the signage, and the building itself. Rather than presenting information as a one-way transmission, the signage is designed to feel as though it is gently speaking to and engaging with its users.
Through this approach, the project gives visual form to the “voice” of Nakano—a city shaped by diversity, openness, and constant exchange.
