Snowmelt
The common concept shared by the architecture, interior, lighting, and signage is “Snowmelt”—the first sign of spring after the long, deep winter of Nagaoka, when the snow begins to thaw and the season starts to change.
The signage system adopts simple and highly legible numerical icons, clearly identifying key destinations while appearing to float within the space at designated points. In the medical consultation areas, internally illuminated signs evoke snowballs softly glowing white as they catch the sunlight.
The icon system, using numbers alone, also provides flexibility for future changes in medical departments, allowing the signage to adapt without altering its fundamental visual identity.
The ward areas are organized symmetrically, with the eastern mountain side distinguished by green tones and the western river side by blue tones. This color coding clearly differentiates the two areas and helps visitors intuitively understand their location.
Along the corridors, which extend for more than 100 meters, patterns inspired by sunlight streaming into the space are applied to the floor. Like the spring sun melting snow, these patterns visually punctuate the long circulation routes while clearly distinguishing between different room types, such as private rooms and four-bed rooms.
